Understanding Surge and Running Wattage: In order to choose the correct generator for your application, you need to understand the power requirements of the devices you plan to operate.

The basic unit of power measurement is the watt, and with a portable generator there are two wattage ratings that are important: "steady-state" or "running wattage" and "surge" or "start-up" wattage. A normal 60 watt incandescent light bulb requires 60 watts and it requires that wattage both when you turn it on and when it is running. A fan motor on the other hand might require 150 watts to start it up and 75 watts while it is running.

That extra wattage to start the motor is called the "surge" wattage and is typical of any device that contains an electric motor. Please see the surge and running wattage ratings for this generator above. Optional Item: VIRGC - Cover - Protects Generator from Weather.
